Can’t Help Myself
Walking down train tracks, London to Basingstoke
It’s been years since any trains ran this line
Keeping eyes out for other roaming gangs
They could come from anywhere at any time
And this isn’t how I saw my future
Scavenging gardens and living day to day
And camping in abandoned houses
Too far from allotments for people to stay
But I know - yeah nothing’s happened for decades
And I’m sure nothing could ever happen here
It’s just smoke and late-night internet
That makes this shit appear
Panic and riots and looting in Aldershot
Hungry suburbanites trudge to the tip
Emergency summits and exploration efforts
Stay calm, stay indoors, wait it out, this is just a blip
Watching prices rise 400%
Watching my first attack at the pumps
Watching dumb-struck pundits watching
Global economies slump
But I know - yeah nothing’s happened for decades
And I’m sure nothing could ever happen here
It’s just smoke and late-night internet
That makes this shit appear
Forgive me I’m sure
Things’ll be back to normal this time next year
I remember television stopping
The first power outages, a silent line
Cars abandoned at the side of the road
Airports full of grounded planes and dead time
I see fields of vandalised solar panels
Ghost town centres, soil and axe heads
Vegetable gardens in backyards and balconies
I steal what I can from people who planned ahead
Yeah - but nothing’s happened for decades
And I’m sure nothing could ever happen here
It’s just smoke and late-night internet
That makes this shit appear
Forgive me, I’m sure
Things’ll be back to normal this time next year
